Alopecia is the process known as hair loss and thinning. There are multiple types of alopecia including alopecia areata, telogen effluvium, and chemotherapy-induced alopecia. Androgenetic alopecia, an autoimmune inflammatory condition, can include alopecia totalis, or a loss of total scalp hair, and alopecia universalis, a total loss of scalp and body hair. Telogen effluvium is an abnormal hair cycle which causes excessive shedding of the hair. Androgenetic alopecia is the most common type of hair loss, affecting 50% of males over the age of 40 and 75% of females over 65.
Other comon causes of thinning hair and hair loss include genetics, acute severe disease, hormone changes, metabolic changes, chemotherapy, surgery, iron deficient anemia, weight loss, pulling/plucking/tugging, harsh chemical treatments, malnutrition, thyroid disease, medications, hormonal changes, and hair applications (weaves, sew-ins, extensions).
