HIV Patient Access Program

“Put back what life took away”

Lipoatrophy is the medical term for loss or “wasting” of fat from the face, buttocks, and other areas of the body.  Moderate to severe lipoatrophy of the face is caused by the medications used to treat HIV.  This wasting from the face has lead to a noticeable “sunken cheeks” look.     Facial volume loss is the most obvious outward sign of HIV because of the visible changes in the cheeks, temples and around the eyes.

In people who are otherwise healthy, the emaciated appearance resulting from facial lipoatrophy can have a devastating psychosocial impact.  Low self esteem, depression, feelings of loss of control, relationship problems, fear of stigmatization, decreased sexual activity and social isolation, all can result from lipoatophy.

Two temporary facial fillers have been approved by the FDA for the correction of HIV associated lipoatrophy:    Merz Aesthetics’ Radiesse,    and Valeant Pharmaceutical’s Sculptra.

Radiesse:

This product contains a synthetic version of calcium hydroxyapatite, a substance found in bones and teeth.  Radiesse was approved for correction of HIV associated lipoatrophy in December 2006.   Merz Aesthetics, the manufacturer of Radiesse,  has set up a patient assistance program to provide the filler at a reduced cost to HIV patients who meet their eligibility requirements.

Sculptra:

This volumizer contains Poly-L-lactic acid, a synthetic product that has a long history of use in reconstructive surgery.  It is what dissolvable sutures are comprised of.   Sculptra was approved for correction on HIV associated lipoatrophy in August 2004.  Valeant Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Sculpta, has set up a patient assistance program to provide the filler at a reduced cost to HIV patients who meet their eligibility requirements.

Dr. Taylor will help facilitate the application process through her office.   Depending on eligibility requirements,  the products will either be provided at no cost to you,  or at a significantly reduced price.  We charge nominal flat fee,  per syringe or vial,  to help offset the costs incurred in our office.   Please call our office for details.
