Medical Marijuana Benefits

Medical Marijuana has been used to help treat symptoms of pain, nausea, muscle spasms, anxiety, seizures, sleep problems, and other conditions. Components of medical marijuana include THC and CBD. THC stands for tetrahydrocannabinol and gives marijuana its psychoactive effects. THC has some medicals uses like relieving nausea, appetite loss, insomnia, and other symptoms.

CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is the component that gives most of the medical benefits. CBD is most famous for treating a rare, debilitating form of pediatric epilepsy called Dravet’s Syndrome. Dravet’s syndrome has drug-resistant seizures making it hard to medicate. A study from 2017 shows that Dravet’s syndrome reduction was seen in all different types of seizure levels. Patients who have epilepsy and seizures have been seen to have a reduction in their number of episodes. CBD has been used to reduce anxiety levels and depression, alleviate cancer-related symptoms, and has neuroprotective effects.

In patients with cancer, medical marijuana can help with the side effects of chemotherapy and the pain of cancer. PTSD affects about 8% of our general public but is seen more commonly in soldiers and veterans, affecting around 20%. Medical marijuana helps increase the level of cannabinoids that are lower in individuals with PTSD alleviating them of many of their symptoms.

How to Consume Medical Marijuana

Smoking Medical Marijuana:

Smoking is the most popular way to consume marijuana. If you’re new to smoking cannabis, begin by taking only one or two puffs and wait to feel their effects before consuming more. Be aware that patients new to cannabis sometimes don’t feel an effect the first time. Rather than consuming a large dose, try again at a later time.

Smoking marijuana typically produces quick results, as the psychoactive chemical in marijuana known as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) quickly enters your bloodstream, as a result, you will feel the relaxing, pain-relieving effects of medical cannabis right away.

Pack a small amount of dried (cured) cannabis flower into a pipe, water pipe (bong), or rolling paper (to create a “joint”). Then hold a flame to the cannabis flower until it burns as you softly inhale the smoke from the mouthpiece or other end of the joint.

Vaping or Vaporizing Medical Marijuana:

The process of vaping weed involves heating cannabis flower or concentrates to a temperature that turns the active compounds (cannabinoids and terpenes) into vapor. Vaporization occurs at lower temperatures than smoking so the flower doesn’t combust. Vaping cannabis involves inhaling heated oil through a vaporizing device.

There are many methods by which people vaporize cannabis. The three main types are tabletop vaporizers, portable vaporizers, and vape or “hash oil” pens.

Eating Medical Marijuana:

Cannabis-infused products, commonly referred to as edibles, provide another option to patients who choose not to smoke their medical marijuana. Edibles come in many different varieties including brownies, candy, chocolate bars, cookies, drinks, pills, snacks, spreads and more. You can expect most edibles to contain a relatively high dosage of THC — and some edibles even have other cannabinoids like cannabidiol (CBD) to produce better medicinal results. There are even some companies that offer a “medicated” meals-on-wheels service for patients that cannot physically leave the house.

Depending on the type of edible can determine how you consume the edible and the effects you fell. Any edible that needs to be digested will take longer to feel the effects but will last longer compared to edibles that don’t need to be digested. Some examples of edibles that don’t need to be digested are gums and lozenges that you will feel the effects faster but have less time feeling the effects. To understand how much of an edible you need, talk to Dr. Terese Taylor, a registered Medical Marijuana Doctor in Cape Coral, Florida
